Although Pyin Oo Lwin is one of the best holiday destinations for local people, you may not feel very entertaining with most of the places where local people visit. But if you know these places, it will be worth visiting to Pyin Oo Lwin while you are in Myanmar. Here is the list of famous places in Pyin Oo Lwin for tourists.
It was originally, British club of Maymyo (Pyin Oo Lwin) and was built in 1904. During the colonial era, the British club was the center of activities where people would meet for drinks, party, and sport.
It is located in a large compound, colonial pile comes with complete side turrets and accompanied by attractively manicured gardens. Many locals believe it’s is haunted. It is one of the Myaing of Pyin Oo Lwin (In Pyin Oo Lwin, 9 colonial buildings are renamed in Burmese word end with Myaing, e.g. Thiri Myaing, Gandamar Myaing, Nan Myaing etc).
Here is a post about my visit to Candacraig Hotel.
It is located at the center point of Pyin Oo Lwin and near to the Purcell Tower of Pyin Oo Lwin. If you choose the hotel near that place, you can take a walk and take a picture of the Mosque and Purcell Tower.
This area is usually crowded and lively, and you can learn the living style of local people. Surrounding area of this Mosque still remains the style of old Pyin Oo Lwin.
The Tower from this mosque resembles a lighthouse and it is a very unique style.
Church of the Immaculate Conception
This is one of the earliest churches in Pyin Oo Lwin and was built in 1905.
Built in 1905, this is one of the earliest churches in Pyin Oo Lwin. The church founded the Tamil School as a neighboring school, which was nationalized in 1966. Now, this Tamil school becomes government middle school.
You can see very interesting photos which illustrated the development and history of this church on the walls of the church office in the Clergy House.
Former Croxton Hotel
Now it is named as Gandamar Myaing Hotel and open for public guest. This is one of the old British Mansions converted into a hotel in Pyin Oo Lwin.
People may not know if you go and ask where is Croxton Hotel, you need to know it’s current Myanmar name.
The landmark of Pyin Oo Lwin, located at the center of the city. Purcell Tower is surrounded by a very lively and active urban living environment but still maintaining real Pyin Oo Lwin older time. It is built in 1936.
Pyin Oo Lwin town center, with a mosque in foreground and Purcell clock tower in the background.
Seventh-Day Adventist Church
This fine half-timbered mansion is a Seventh-day Adventist Church. Which is located near the Shan Market.
All Saints’ Church
This red-brick church was founded in 1912 and hosts regular services for local believers till now.
Survey Training Centre
This colonial style building is functioning as a survey training center of Upper Myanmar. It is well maintained and operated. You may need to ask permission to go inside and take a picture of this building. But I was not allowed to go inside of the building when I visited there.
Number 4 High School
British-era building which was transformed into government high school. You can see this big building from the outside. If you want to take a picture of it closely, you may need to request permission. I would like to suggest you go after 4:00 PM or go on a weekend when school is closed.
Nan Myaing Hotel
Most famous one among Pyin Oo Lwin Hotels for being hunted. But sadly the company which operated this hotel will close down its operation and will return back to the government because of the low volume of the guests in this year.
This is not an old building from the colonial age. It was rebuilt and restricted to resemble the real one. One company is operating this place and you have to pay 2000 kyats to take a picture outside. If you want to go inside, you need to pay another 2,000 kyats. You can get one coffee and cake at the coffee bar.
Barista khine Coffee shop
Why did you put this coffee shop on this list? Are you the owner of this shop????
No.. I am not totally related to this place. But If you want to enjoy a true taste of Pyin Oo Lwin coffee, this place is a must to visit. It is not a cozy and not well decorative to take a selfie, but taste will be unforgettable. Just order simple Pyin Oo Lwin coffee.
If you want to explore the life of local, there is a Pyin Oo Lwin market which still maintains the real local market but starts to be influenced by Chinese influx
